what is a supercapacitor?

shortly spoken: supercapacitors are high-capacity capacitors - they have higher capacitance and lower voltage limits than other types of capacitors. they lie somewhere in between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries. this means in practice: they charge much faster than batteries and are capable of highest amp-discharge, due to low internal resistance.

what is the difference between a (starter)battery and a supercapacitor?

batteries offer a superior energy density and possess a higher breakdown voltage while supercapacitors are smaller, lighter, have more robust operating limits, possess a longer life expectancy and have an unparalleled power density.

what is a supercapacitor used for?

supercapacitors are used in applications requiring many (up to 10.000 cycles) rapid charge/ discharge cycles, rather than long-term compact energy storage. they are deployed in automobiles, buses, trains, cranes & elevators where they are used for regenerative braking, short term energy storage or burst-mode power delivery.

can i use a supercapacitor as a starter-battery?

capacitors don`t provide a large amount of energy storage because they have less energy density than batteries. capacitors are useful to provide short duration high power requirements because they can be charged or discharged at a higher rate than normal batteries and because of this specifications they are the perfect engine starters.
